Unlocking Innovation Through Reverse Engineering

In today’s fast-paced manufacturing world, reverse engineering is not just a workaround for missing design file; it’s a forward-looking strategy for improving, replicating, and reimagining components with confidence. At SS Metrology Solutions, we help organizations bring physical objects into the digital space with speed, accuracy, and clarity. Whether it’s to refine a product, verify a component, or build a better version of what already exists, reverse engineering is a foundational tool for quality and innovation.

What Is Reverse Engineering?

Reverse engineering is the process of capturing the shape and features of a physical object to generate a digital 3D model. It’s most commonly used when original CAD data is unavailable, but the benefits extend much further. It allows for design optimization, competitive benchmarking, digital archiving, and improved integration into today’s CAD/CAM workflows.

This process is especially useful across industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and construction— where accuracy and speed are critical, and where physical components often outlive their documentation.

Our Methods

At SS Metrology Solutions, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. Each project is approached with the right mix of technology, software, and expertise to match the complexity, size, and condition of the part or environment.

We deploy state-of-the-art 3D scanning tools to capture geometry with unmatched precision:

  • Scantech NimbleTrack – A wireless, marker-free 3D scanning system perfect for dynamic environments and parts with complex surfaces.

  • Leica ATS600 Laser Tracker – A high-accuracy, long-range measurement system ideal for large components and structural elements.

  • Scantech SIMSCAN E – A compact, handheld 3D scanner designed for tight spaces and detailed work, offering exceptional resolution for small to mid-sized parts.

Once data is captured, we process and transform it using expert software solutions tailored for reverse engineering and dimensional analysis:

  • PolyWorks|Inspector™ – An industry-standard metrology platform used for analyzing geometry, comparing to CAD, and producing detailed reports.

  • Geomagic Design X – A powerful reverse engineering tool that converts scan data into editable, parametric CAD models compatible with most mainstream platforms like SolidWorks or Inventor.

Our reverse engineering process is flexible, traceable, and repeatable. From in-field scanning to final CAD model delivery, we work closely with your team to ensure the results meet your engineering and production needs.

At SS Metrology Solutions, we don’t just scan and model—we solve challenges. Reverse engineering is about turning what you have into what you need, and doing it faster, more accurately, and with long-term usability in mind.
